Adobe in addition to knowing a thing or two about software, certainly knows how to stir up lively debate.
No one can deny that they make some fine software, that the vast majority of photographers use.
The software ship seemed to be sailing along just fine, with the option of subscribing to the software if you wanted access to a wide range of their software.
Then a bolt from the blue.
You can no longer buy the software.
You must subscribe to it....

Following feedback from NABConvergent Design decoded to make some changes to the pricing of the Odyssey7 and Odyssey 7Q. In case you haven’t already heard about these devices they are 7″ OLED monitors that also have the ability to record to onboard SSD’s. Originally the Odyssey units were not going to include any recording capability as standard. All the recording options were going to be paid for updates or available for short term rental. However Convergent Design have now decided to include the ability to record using Avid’s DNxHD codec within the original price of $1295 for the Odyssey 7 and $2295 for the more advanced 7Q. There is however a small catch. In order to use the “free” codec options you must use a Convergent Design supplied SSD...

I'm set to be shooting a multi angle time lapse of the installation of a rather expensive piece of industrial machinery.
It will be shot over 10 days too, so all the experience gained in my yet to be shown forced rhubarb time lapse should come in very handy. Primary position will be covered off with a Canon 5d MkI, with a Canon TC-80N3 and powered with a mains adaptor Canon ECK-E2, the super wide interior shot will be covered off with a GoPro Hero 2 with a clever little mod of a time-lapse intervalometer from Camdo.com, this combo will be powered by a 16,000 mAh iSound battery, which in turn will be plugged into the mains, charging as it powers the GoPro. This is a great back up just incase there is any sort of power outage and should keep going no matter what, I used this combo in the Far East on some fun little time lapses. I need a third angle too, what camera should I use? I do need a a tighter shot, so a DSLR is the order of the day, but I don't really want to sacrifice the shutter of a 5d MkII...

Magic Lantern (ML) is a Canon firmware toolbox specifically aiming for the video segment. It has recently got a huge buzz for enabling a Canon's 5DmkII to shoot 24P RAW video. And while ML is not the oldest of custom firmware, it is definitely one of the more mature ones, with many movie makers using it on production setups. As with CHDK, it usually run from the memory card and does not require a firmware "flush.

A reader informed me that Samsung released the code for the NX200 and NX300 mirrorless cameras as open source based on the Cortex A9 quad core CPU and Neon coprocessor. This means that everyone can download it and make their own modifications, fix bugs, add new features, etc. As far as I know, this is the first major camera manufacturer to release their source code to the public. Could this be the beginning of the open source camera...

Like you I spend a bunch of time every single day working through my inbox, answering emails, sending emails, reading emails, deleting emails. I’ve shared my personal inbox management system before so you can go ahead and read that if you missed it but the fact is that you and I spend a buttload of time there. Which means, naturally, that there is a literal cost of real resources that we’ve allocated to it. I emphasize real here because some people have not ever thought about this and are making many people’s lives very miserable, like mine.... read more!

Power is a necessity in today's modern world. Most of us take for granted the work that it takes to build and maintain the power grid that supplies us with the electricity that powers our lives. Storm Soldiers is a film about the men who make it all happen. The linemen who work tirelessly behind the scenes so we can power our computers, heat our homes and light our lives. Danger is around every corner for linemen and the job is constantly on the top ten list for most dangerous jobs. This film is a tribute to the men and women that literally put their lives on the line everyday.

I’ve been looking forward to writing this post about one of my favorite spots of this season, “Djesus Uncrossed”. First I should acknowledge that this was, by far, the most controversial spot I’ve been a part of in my history with the show. Religious groups were infuriated while pop artists were inspired to create fan-art....

After publishing my articles on How To Succeed As A Freelancer and How To Determine Your Day Rate I have received emails asking me how I broke into the film industry. As I have been reflecting on how I got my start, I realized it can be boiled down to two simple principles. By applying these principles to your career, you will be able to break into the film industry and grow your career.
Principle 01: It is not about what you know; it is about who you know.
